After we’d set a date for our big day and booked up all the venues we set about looking for a photographer. Despite the huge choice within the ‘wedding’ industry it wasn’t as easy as you’d imagine. Most of the photos we’d seen over the years from hetro. weddings were at best, very stylised and cliché, and at worst, taken by domineering, bullish photographers. We didn’t want either. The other problem was that, although we weren’t especially looking to patronise only ‘gay’ providers, we knew that of all the people involved in the day the person we had to feel most comfortable with was the photographer otherwise we’d have a set of photos taken of; “me and my friend”!! It was becoming a problem, as we’d not met anyone who’d had experience of civil partnership and/or made us feel relaxed. We were about to ask a friend to take snapshots…… As fate would have it we went to Bristol pride and ‘Cherish’ had a stall so we had our photo taken. Being awkward, and because we had ulterior motives, we asked Mandy if we could have it printed in black & white. Despite not having the facilities on site, she happily obliged, took our details and within a couple of weeks had sent us two beautiful prints at no extra cost. They were, without doubt, the best photos we’d ever had and we looked ourselves!! We immediately decided that we wanted ‘Cherish’, met up again at the Gay Wedding Fair in Cardiff and booked up. Now, we had not planned to have a film of the day as it wasn’t really feasible in our budget but after being introduced to Mandy’s partner, Jackie and examples of the DVD’s she produced we began to change our minds. Despite the additional cost it was the best decision we made and was well worth the extra. The quality of the DVD is excellent-the additional music really adds to the emotions of the day and the complete look is so professional. Everyone who has seen it is in awe of the quality finish-and we even get to have our faces on a DVD disc!! We had a lot going on our day; the ceremony in Bath Guildhall, a walk to the park, a drink in a café bar, an open top bus tour and finally an evening party complete with hog roast, chocolate fountain and Dusty Springfield tribute cabaret-not to forget the prerequisite cheesy speeches!! All this was put together in a 60 min format that really is a pleasure to watch, (unlike other wedding videos that seem to drone on and on) family members & friends have even asked to borrow it to watch it again themselves. How often does that happen! Our favourite bit has to be the black & white montage, which you can go straight to from the main menu, and is just the right length to watch every day!!! Mandy was right, we laughed, we cried and every emotion of the day is captured fabulously. The photographs are beautiful too, our brief was met exactly having some posed, formal shots in the traditional style together with an abundant mix of natural, relaxed and amusing moments captured without the subject noticing. One thing that really struck was the ability Mandy has to take high quality pictures without all the faffing and shouting I’d seen so often before. Quietly spoken and organised she took the traditional photos quickly, calmly and it was an enjoyable part of the day. We also commented on what a good eye she had for choosing where she wanted the shots-everyone loves the shot of us, in full regalia, taking a rest in a couple of deck chairs!! Without a shadow of a doubt, we would recommend Cherish to everyone, especially the gay community. Mandy and Jackie fitted into our day perfectly, they blended into the background seamlessly and we really forgot they were there, yet somehow still had over 500 photographs to choose from, in a wide choice of finishes, plus the DVD. A substantial number of our guests commented on how lovely they were and how hard they worked. The old dears said they were ‘very polite, nice girls’ and a number of people reminded us how they had stayed until very late in the evening and mentioned how impressed they were by their obvious hard work throughout the day. We can only agree and say Thankyou for their part in making the best day of our lives- a cliché we know, but oh so true. On the wedding day Mandy was very good at handling people - very important with little flower girls running all over the place! Mandy's photographs are really brilliant.
